WASHINGTON 2 Sept.
– AFP

Home Depot investigates possible payment data breach

Home Depot said Tuesday it was investigating a possible breach of its systems holding customer payment information tied to credit and debit cards.

“We’re looking into some unusual activity and we are working with our banking partners and law enforcement to investigate,” Home Depot spokeswoman Paula Drake said via email.

The source of the possible breach, as well as the number of people who might be affected, was not immediately clear.

Home Depot is “aggressively gathering facts” and will notify customers immediately if it determines there was a breach, she said.

If there was, it would be the latest in a string of high-profile attacks this past year that have hit companies including Target, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro and Neiman Marcus.

Sony joins AllSeen Alliance to push for common ground in IoT

Sony has now joined Microsoft, LG Electronics and other consumer electronics vendors in the AllSeen Alliance, strengthening the group’s effort to make “Internet of things” devices work together.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment titan joined 10 other Premier members of the group, which includes Panasonic, Sharp, Haier and Qualcomm Connected Experiences in addition to Microsoft, LG and others, the AllSeen Alliance said Tuesday. The group also has 53 Community Members.

The alliance formed last December to push interoperability among connected devices such as TVs, smartphones and household appliances. The common thread among them is AllJoyn, open-source software originally developed by Qualcomm that can work on devices with different hardware platforms, operating systems and other components.

Groups: FCC shouldn't overturn state laws against municipal broadband

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission should stay out of the way of states that have passed laws prohibiting or limiting city-funded broadband networks that compete with private services, several groups have told the agency.

The FCC, considering whether to preempt laws in 20 states that restrict municipal broadband projects, should instead give private broadband providers incentives to better service communities, several representatives of broadband providers wrote in comments to the agency.

The city of Wilson, North Carolina, and the Electric Power Board of Chattanooga, Tennessee, have asked the FCC to step in and remove state restrictions on their ability to offer broadband service. A long-simmering debate over whether cities should be able to offer broadband service gained traction in June, when FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler raised concerns about a Tennessee law that prevents Chattanooga from expanding its municipal broadband footprint.
